Halloween 2019

I didn’t grow up celebrating Halloween. Well, not in the normal sense anyway. My parents would take all of us children (did I mention before that I’m 1 of 9?!") out for pizza and then give us candy before bringing us home, having missed the trick or treaters that surely would have passed by our house on our small New Hampshire town’s hayride.

I didn’t really think much of it, as it was all I knew. I got candy and didn’t even have to work for it! But it has creating a bit of a curmudgeon in me when it comes to Halloween. I don’t enjoy dressing up, the very thought of it stresses me out. My parents have since said they’re not really sure why they were so against it (my guess is it wasn’t cool at the time with conservative christianity) , and both participate in it now with their grandchildren, both by going on the hayride with their grandchildren trick or treating and handing out treats.

So, I dress my kids up and we have fun! It’s been nice to participate in it as a mother, seeing how much fun Jeff has pretending to be someone (an astronaut) and hang out with his friends getting candy.

We did a Trick or Treating event last Friday around our town’s downtown area, where the local businesses hand out candy. My sister in law came over with her kids after school and we walked down to it. In a hurry to get Jeff dressed while I put Simone down for a nap, she zipped him up in his astronaut costume backwards, it was hilarious and he didn’t mind one bit!

My sister Rose flew up from Washington D.C to come with us trick or treating. The hayride was cancelled due to an incoming storm that didn’t come til after Trick or Treating was over (lol). We went to a neighboring town with friends and had a fun—yet hectic—time trick or treating there. I was personally overwhelmed at being in a crowd of 500 children … and hope that next year the hayride is back on. But I daresay that I had fun and look forward to going trick or treating with my kids again next year. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get dressed up?!
